Monthly club night Progress Bar returns on 31 March

After a successful double feature during Sonic Acts Academy 2018, monthly club night Progress Bar returns for a new edition on Saturday 31 March at Paradiso Noord, Tolhuistuin. Aiming to represent radical equality, communality and hopefulness, Progress Bar is a growing community of artists, academics and activists who occupy clubs for a better politics. The next edition features DJ sets, live performances and talks by Countess Malaise, HVAD, Kieran Yates, Manara, mobilegirl, Petit Singe and STILL. Countess Malaise is a high-energy rapper and visual artist born and raised in Iceland, and based in Amsterdam. With an equal emphasis on the lyrical, performative, and visual components, Countess Malaise’s work touches upon subjects that are widely considered taboo, and her refusal to conform and powerful live performances make this rising talent one to watch. HVAD is the alias of Copenhagen-based musician Kid Kishore. Apart from being the owner of the notorious Danish label Syg Nok records, HVAD has also been involved in a variety of projects, such as owning the Kommunial Dubplate service in Denmark, collaborating with like-minded artists including Albertslund Terrorkorps and Tantra, and releasing on the Berlin-based label Janus. Kieran Yates is a London-based journalist and broadcaster reporting on culture, news and politics. She currently has a column at Vice called ‘British Values’ and writes regularly for The Guardian, Fader, and Dazed. In 2016, she was nominated for Culture Writer of the Year and Best Investigation for her Guardian documentary, Muslim Drag Queens. Manara is a south London DJ and producer. Having spun for the cousinly crews Night Slugs and Fade To Mind, she established the BBC AZN Network radio show on UK station Radar Radio with fellow London artists 2shin and Sweyn Jupiter, playing a seamless and original mix of bollywood, grime, bashment and club music. mobilegirl, aka Bao-Tran Tran, first caught wider attention with her remix on Dinamarca's No Hay Break Remix EP. Having connected with the Staycore collective soon after she started making music, the DJ has been picking up pace with a focus on danceable rhythms while managing to blend musical styles from different ends of the spectrum. Petit Singe is Indian-born, Italy-based DJ and producer Hazina Francia. Petit Singe reminisces on her own eastern heritage with a sensibility equally close to the most recent developments at the darker side of club music. A lover of polyrhythms and breakbeats, her intent is to let the body speak a new shared language of narcotic enchantment. STILL explores vernacular worlds of sound and imagery on their recent debut release via PAN, with multi-layered dancehall tracks inspired by the complex historical links between STILL’s hometown, Vernasca, with Jamaica, and Italy’s colonial past in Ethiopia. Vocalists Devon Miles, Freweini and Keidino voice a complex, overarching past that is both communal and individual. Stay updated by following the Facebook event page here.
