Lukas De Clerck
Lukas De Clerck is an artist and musician based in Brussels whose work centres on the aulos, an ancient double-reeded double pipe that disappeared from use over a millennium ago. After years of self-directed research into the instrument, he has moved toward collaborative and multidisciplinary modes of working. Each collaboration, whether combining the sound of the aulos with contemporary instruments, tape, or computer technology, can be seen as an anachronism, creating dialogues between the present, multiple pasts, and their re-imaginations.
His self-invented telescopic aulos, reinterpreted by a luthier in modern times, extends this research, allowing detailed investigations into microtonality, psychoacoustics, and sound texture. Approaching the instrument from a phenomenological perspective, De Clerck has become a distinctive voice in the aulos revival, bringing it into dialogue with diverse musical fields.
His music has been released on labels including Ideologic Organ, KRAAK, blickwinkel, and Beyt Al Tapes, and he has performed internationally at venues and festivals such as Sonic Acts, Blank Forms, Cafe OTO, Les Instants Chavirés, Archipel Festival, and STUK.
Lukas De Clerck was a resident at Sonic Acts’ Spatial Sound Residency in 2025.
